Inaugural Girl's Wrestling Championship

The State CIF officially sanctioned Girl's Wrestling for the 2011-12 season and the Los Angeles City Section followed by sanctioning the sport and a Section Championship for the 2012-13 season. This past Saturday, 67 girls competed in 13 of the 14 weight classifications at the Los Angeles City Section Championship. Taking the inaugural championship honors for each weight class include:

Jocelyn Vargas, San Fernando High School - 108 lbs.
Jasmine Aquino, San Fernando High School - 114 lbs.
Cynthia Medina, San Fernando High School - 118 lbs.
Jasmine Heraldez, Panorama High School - 122 lbs.
Melissa Martinez, Panorama High School - 126 lbs.
Jasmin gonzalez, San Fernando High School - 132 lbs.
Melina Aguilar, Bell High School - 138 lbs.
Perla Lopez, San Fernando High School - 154 lbs.
Margaret Amaya, Franklin High School - 165 lbs.
Lakiya Wagoner, Birmingham Charter High School - 189 lbs.

In a close battle for the team award, Panorama came away with the top honors followed by San Fernando as the runner up. Outstanding wrestler awards were presented to the top point earners in both the upper weight classes and the lower weight classes. Jasmine Gonzalez of San Fernando and Perla Lopez of San Fernando were the top individual point earners to earn the Outstanding Individual Wrestlers of the tournament. This was a memorable event for all the wrestlers and those that attended. With the excitment experenced at the championship we look forward to continued growth in numbers of participants and schools.
All weight classification except 148 & 235 have qualified for the State CIF Championship Tournament to be held Friday and Saturday, February 22 & 23 at Lemoore High School in Lemoore, California. Good luck to all!
