Birmingham, Dorsey, and Port of Los Angeles Charter Win Section Baseball Championships

An exciting weekend of baseball saw Dorsey High School defeat Van Nuys in the opening game at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, June 7, to win the Division II title by a score of 9 - 6. Dorsey wins their first baseball title in over 50 years.

Before 2,000 fans at Dodger Stadium, Birmingham Community Charter continued to play an outstanding tournament with a 6 - 3 victory over West Valley League rival Chatsworth. Birmingham, the sixth seed in the tournament had consecutive victories over Kennedy, Narbonne and Chatsworth, the number 2, 3, and 5 seeds.

On Monday, June 9 at USC Dedeaux Field, Port of Los Angeles Charter, captured the Division III championship, the first baseball championship in school history. In the bottom of the 9th inning, first baseman, Chris Marshall doubles and advanced to third on a bunt by the next batter.Ricky Vasquez. Pinch hitter, Mat Sparks hit a hard drive splitting the Fulton infield for a walk-off single scoring Marshall for the winning run. An exciting ending to a tournament filled with unpredictable finishes. Congratulations to all!

The Sid Witherow Award, presented to the player with the outstanding performance in the Division I championship was awarded to Justin Rorick, Freshman Designated hitter, from Birmingham Community Charter. The Les Haserot Award, presented to the outstanding player of the tournament was presented to Adrian Rodriguez, Junior, pitcher from Birmingham Community Charter.
