Narbonne Girls Basketball Reinstated; View Park Girls to Continue Playing in Consolation Bracket

Narbonne’s suspension has been lifted, the forfeits overturned and the ruling by the three-member panel has reinstated Narbonne High School into the Girls Open Division championship game on Saturday, March 7, against Palisades Charter High School at 6 pm at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The appeals committee decided upon the following penalties effective immediately:

Head Coach Vicky Sanders has been suspended from the remainder of the Section playoffs and the State playoffs for 2015.

Narbonne will not host any home playoff contests in 2016.

Narbonne will remain on probation for the 2015-2016 calendar year.

“In the spirit of the game and for the kids, the appeals committee has decided to grant Narbonne’s request for reinstatement into the 2015 CIF LA City Section basketball playoffs,” Commissioner John Aguirre said. “We will continue to review Narbonne’s athletic program and compliance with the Section policies and bylaws over the next year.”

View Park will now play Carson in an Open Division consolation semifinal at a date and time to be determined.

Narbonne High School has requested and been granted an appeal hearing. The hearing will take place today at an unspecified location. A three member panel composed of executive committee members from the Section Board of Managers will sit on the panel. Representatives from Narbonne have been invited to present their appeal.

The CIF Los Angeles City Section has declared Narbonne’s 57-52 win over View Park as a forfeit. Narbonne was in violation of Article 1305 in the CIF LA City Section Goldbook for wearing pink letters and numbers in its uniforms on Saturday’s Girls Open Division semifinal game at Roybal Learning Center. Pink is not a school color at Narbonne. In addition, Narbonne has been removed entirely from the playoffs due to being on probation for the 2014-15 calendar year.

Article 1305 reads-

“It is the responsibility of each school to ensure that all uniforms meet the National Federation specifications for that sport. Uniform colors may only be a combination of the official school colors as listed in the Board of Managers Gold Book. White may be used without exception. White, grey, silver and black may be used as accent colors. Black may be used as an alternate color provided the principal has declared as such through the process determined by the Section Office. Grey may be used as an alternate color by the visiting team in the sport of baseball only. Other than the above, if a school changes or adds to its school colors during a school year, the change would not be effective (as per this rule) until the following school year. Penalties will include probation and forfeiture of contests. A Principal may request a waiver from the Section Commissioner under certain hardship conditions. It is the expectation that, where applicable, athletes will wear the same number throughout the season, except when there are extenuating circumstances, such as a change in position which dictates a change in number. It is also expected that all players will wear the same uniform playing on the same team/level.”

View Park Charter statement-

“As a result of the CIF Los Angeles City Section decision today about the Open Elite Division bracket, View Park Preparatory Accelerated Charter High School (VPHS) is confirmed to play against Carson High School for the constellation semi-final game on Wednesday, March 4 at 7pm at St. Mary’s Academy (701 Grace Ave. Inglewood, 90301).   Showing their sportsmanship and dedication to basketball, their school and the CIF, VPHS (a part of ICEF Public Schools) agrees to the CIF’s panel decision and is now focused on their next game.  Led by Coach Corry Thomas, the 14-member girls high school basketball team is showcasing ICEF Public Schools’ core values including collaboration, community, teamwork and the ICEF Athletics program as they prepare for their next game in the division.  Three of the five seniors on the VPHS team are starters and are looking to make the most of an unfortunate situation in their final year of high school.

VPHS is part of the CIF Los Angeles City Section Open Elite Division which is comprised of top Los Angeles basketball programs.  In ICEF’s 15-year-history, this is the first time that all four high school basketball teams (boys and girls) have advanced to the CIF Championship and the CIF State Tournament.   ICEF’s two high schools (VPHS and Frederick Douglass Academy Charter High School) are members of CIF in good-standing and respect the panel’s decision.  Our focus is on the game and to celebrate all of the players’ teamwork and dedication.”
