Mike Walsh Steps Down as Head Coach of San Pedro Football

San Pedro's Mike Walsh announced Saturday that he was stepping down as head coach of the Pirates’ football program after 25 successful years. Walsh ends his incredible coaching career at San Pedro with an overall record of 227-74-2 including five CIF LA City Section titles, the most recent in 2008 when the Pirates tied Narbonne in the Division I championship game. He also guided San Pedro to 10 Marine League titles.

“God has blessed me. It’s been a wonderful experience with great kids and coaches,” Walsh told the LA Daily Breeze. “You couldn’t have written a better script.

“This community means a lot to me. I’m proud to be from here and to represent San Pedro on the football field for the last 25 years.”

Athletic Director Bob Schatz expressed his emotions on one of the South Bay's finest football coaches.

"In the past 25 years that I have been at San Pedro High, Mike Walsh and San Pedro Football have been synonymous. It is hard to express how valuable Mike has been to this program, its players, and this community,” Schatz said. “His intensity, work ethic, and passion both for the San Pedro Football program and this community are unparalleled. We will hire a new coach but there will never be another Mike Walsh - his legacy at SPHS is now forever etched in the storied lore of San Pedro High School."

Here are recent stories on Walsh’ resignation and tributes to the man who defined San Pedro football with integrity, loyalty and passion:
